Several years ago, when returning home to Suffolk after a few days work in London, I parked the car and looked at the beech tree in the garden.

It was in exactly the same place as I remembered it being when I last saw it (of course).

The work had been intense and stressful, and I was tired from driving round all over the place.

This was the first time the expression 'putting down roots' really struck me.

It is therefore amusing to me that walking sticks the world over, which accompany us on our wanderings, started off their 'lives' attached to roots in the ground.

First drawing for the Walking Stick series, a collection of alternative walking sticks (a work in progress).
